IN APRIL 1968, a group of thirty individuals from ten countries-scientists, educators, economists, humanists, industrialists, and national and international civil servants-gathered in the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome.
They met at the instigation of Dr. Aurelio Peccei, an Italian industrial manager, economist, and man of vision, to discuss a subject of staggering scope-the present and future predicament of man.
Its purposes are to foster understanding of the varied but interdependent components-economic, political, natural, and social-that make up the global system in which we all live; to bring that new understanding to the attention of policy-makers and the public worldwide; and in this way to promote new policy initiatives and action.
On goal #1 : Predicament of the future : full success
On goal #2 : Awarness of the decision : total failure
The Phase One study was conducted by an international team, under the direction of Professor Dennis Meadows, with financial support from the Volkswagen Foundation.
I do not wish to seem overdramatic, but
I can only conclude from the Information that Is available to me as Secretary General, that the Members of the United Nations have perhaps ten years left In which to subordinate their ancient
quarrels and launch a global partnership to curb the arms race, to improve the human environment, to defuse the population explosion, and to supply the required momentum to development
efforts. If such a global partnership Is not forged within the next decade, then I very much fear that the problems I have mentioned will have reached such staggering proportions that they will be
beyond our capacity to control.

Man possesses, for a small moment in his history, the most powerful combination of knowledge, tools, and resources the world has ever known. He has all that is physically necessary to create a totally new form of human society-one that would be built to last for generations. The two missing ingredients are a realistic, long-term goal that can guide mankind to the equilibrium society and the human will to achieve that goal.
Without such a goal and a commitment to it, short-term concerns will generate the exponential growth that drives the world system toward the limits of the earth and ultimate collapse. With that goal and that commitment, mankind would be ready now to begin a controlled, orderly transition from growth to global equilibrium.

➡️ En 1972, année de parution de l’ouvrage sur les limites de la croissance, le message principal des chercheurs est que nos sociétés ne peuvent continuer à croître indéfiniment dans un monde fini.
➡️ Peu mentionné dans la première édition, le

a pris de plus en plus de place dans les rééditions du rapport au Club de Rome.
➡️ Lorsqu’il fait le bilan de ses 50 années de recherche et qu’il se projette vers les 25 suivantes, Dennis Meadows prévoit de grands bouleversements à venir sur l’énergie, les matières premières ou la pollution, déstabilisant davantage les sociétés dans lesquelles nous vivons.
➡️ La succession de crises financières, immobilières ou économiques, fragilisent les entreprises et les poussent à questionner en profondeur leur modèle basé sur une croissance sans fin et une recherche de la productivité à tout prix, au détriment de la

à moyen terme.
➡️ Plus que jamais, c’est l’occasion de se mobiliser, pour transformer nos entreprises et nos sociétés, en mettant au centre de nos modes de vie, la résilience.
➡️ Dans un monde fini où le changement climatique est désormais une réalité pour tous·tes, c’est l’adaptation et la transition vers un monde bas-carbone qui doivent être au cœur de nos démarches.
