The US medical technology company Auxilium Biotechnologies has begun clinical trials of a newly developed implant to promote nerve regeneration. The device, known as the NeuroSpan Bridge, was developed specifically for use in peripheral nerve damage and is based on additive manufacturing processes using biomimetic materials.
A total of 80 patients at several locations in the USA are to be included in the Neurospan-1 study that has now been launched. The aim is to evaluate both the safety and efficacy of the implant in comparison to established forms of therapy. The implant is inserted into nerve gaps to promote the controlled ingrowth of new nerve fibers while reducing the risk of complications such as neuroma formation or chronic pain.
Technologically, NeuroSpan Bridge is based on a 3D printing process that creates precisely structured scaffolds from bioresorbable polymers. These structures mimic the natural architecture of nerve tissue and serve as a temporary matrix for axonal growth. Auxilium combines materials with coordinated mechanical properties and microstructured surface topography to specifically influence cell behavior.
“We’ve spent years developing a technology with the potential to change lives, and today, we are one step closer to making that a reality,” said Jacob Koffler, PhD, MBA, CEO of Auxilium.
Auxilium also refers to previous research results from microgravitational environments, where components were manufactured using bioprinting technologies on board the International Space Station. This experience was incorporated into the design of the NeuroSpan Bridge and underlines the company’s interdisciplinary approach to developing novel implant solutions.
