Mercedes-Benz and Google announced a partnership on February 22 that will provide “supercomputer” navigation and autonomous driving technology to the automaker’s array of vehicles. A level 3 self-driving capability will be available to drivers who pay for the feature, which is a first for the industry.
Mercedes has an advantage against Tesla’s luxury EV competition since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration designated it as the first level 3 provider earlier this year. Especially considering the problems Tesla has had since launching their own diver assistance program.
According to Chief Executive Ola Kaellenius, the German automaker, Nvidia, agreed to split profits with chip manufacturer, which is a partner in developing automated driving software from 2020. In an effort to reduce the upfront cost of purchasing pricey high-powered semiconductors.
Kaellenius claimed that the sunk costs would be modest even if drivers did not activate every option made available by the chip, arguing that you should simply pay for a substantially subsidized chip and then work out how to optimize shared revenue.
On the other hand, Mercedes owns a small stake in self-driving sensor manufacturer Luminar Technologies. The company announced that it had signed a multi-billion dollar agreement with the automaker to incorporate its sensors into a variety of its vehicles by the middle of the decade, sending Luminous shares up over 25%.
Whereas, Mercedes claimed that its partnership with Google will enable it to provide autonomous rerouting and traffic information in its vehicles.
Whether the vehicle is parked or in Level 3 autonomous driving mode, which permits a driver to take their eyes off the wheel on specific roads as long as they can restore control if necessary, drivers will also be able to watch YouTube on the entertainment system.
