In Brief
Microsoft researchers are proposing to combine chatbot technology with other AI models to create a “universal assistant” that can handle a range of tasks, including natural language processing, image recognition, and multi-step processes.
If successful, the chatbot technology, known as ChatGPT, could be used in a variety of settings, including customer service, healthcare, and education.
Under the hood, 15 different models and tasks are available that allow users to interact with ChatGPT by sending and receiving text messages, providing complex visual questions, and providing feedback and corrections.

According to recent reports, Microsoft researchers have proposed to combine chatbot technology with other AI models in order to create what they are calling a “universal assistant.” The hope is that this assistant will be able to handle a range of tasks, including but not limited to tasks that require natural language processing, image recognition, and even multi-step processes.

If the research team has been successful in their endeavors, the chatbot technology that they are currently working on – which is known as ChatGPT – could potentially be used in a wide variety of settings, including customer service, healthcare, and even education. And, perhaps most importantly, it would allow users to interact with the chatbot even more naturally.
Researchers combined ChatGPT with Visual Foundation Models, such as Visual Transformers or Stable Diffusion, so that the chatbot could understand and generate images and not just text. Under the hood, more than 15 different models and tasks (“tools”) have been combined, and they allow the user to interact with ChatGPT by:
- sending and receiving not only text messages but also images;
- providing complex visual questions or editing instructions that require multiple AI models to work together with multiple steps;
- providing feedback and requesting corrections.
One of the primary goals of the research team is to make ChatGPT more “humanlike.” To do this, they are working on making the chatbot more communicative and interactive. Additionally, they are working on making the chatbot more adept at handling complex tasks that require multiple steps.
Interestingly, the research team is also investigating the possibility of using ChatGPT to control other AI models. This would allow the chatbot to act as a “universal assistant” that could handle a variety of tasks, including tasks that require natural language processing, image recognition, and even multi-step processes.

No extra training is carried out; all tasks are completed using prompts, which are text commands that either people developed and fed into ChatGPT or ChatGPT created and fed into other models (that is, it kind of controls them).
The same StableDiffusion or ControlNet is downloaded and used locally for all picture models, and ChatGPT twitches in response to an API. As a result, you can set up a chatbot on your computer and receive instructions from a text neuron. But, soon after the first public release of ChatGPT’s rival, you will be able to complete the entire process locally.
