A patient-specific 3D-printed scaphoid replacement was recently successfully implanted at the Davis Medical Center in West Virginia. The operation was performed by Michael J. Hurst, a podiatry specialist, in cooperation with the company restor3d. An additively manufactured implant was used, which was precisely adapted to the patient’s individual anatomy on the basis of detailed medical imaging.
The scaphoid bone, also known as the navicular bone, is a central component of the arch of the foot and plays an important role in stability and mobility. In this particular case, the natural bone tissue was no longer functional due to a lack of blood supply. By using additive manufacturing, it was possible to produce a custom-fit replacement made of biocompatible material that replicates both the structural and functional properties of the original.
The implant was manufactured on the basis of high-resolution CT data, which was transferred into a printable model. Compared to standardized implants, this procedure allows for a more precise reconstruction and can lead to a shorter rehabilitation time postoperatively.
