Ever since the Iron man movie came out in 2008, having a conversational AI has been on almost everyone’s bucket list. With OpenAI’s chatbot currently in beta, I daresay that dream is now closer than ever before to becoming reality.
I took the chatbot for a spin and here is our first conversation went
I then followed up with a question to test the limits of how well it understood a question without full context of reference to the previous question and also test its self awareness
The fact that it led the answer with an empathy statement made me smile. It then gave a brief summary of what Jarvis is and what it can do versus what its is and what it can do clearly outlining their differences and mentioning its limits leaves you with some clear understanding of what you can try to get it to do.
I decided to test those limits. I first asked it to write a sonnet. Here is what it came up with.

I was impressed. I then followed up with something a little off and a little bit more practical to real world uses I’d love to have (The idea is from Age of Ultron)
Well. Bummer, but moving on swiftly. I asked it the next useful skill it would be nice to have
Well, as Babbage once said
“On two occasions I have been asked, ‘Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?’ […] I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question”
The question I had asked was a general question, so I got a general answer. I decided to be a little bit specific and I rephrased my question
I noticed that the more specific the question was, the more specific the answer was. At this point I decided I am going to write post about this on medium so I decided to do a few quick questions on general public information to test how well it could be useful in summarizing information and how well updated the current beta version is.
It understood previous context and picked up from the first question. I then closed the window and restored it with Ctrl+Shft+W and asked it to restore our chats
Well, that wasnt nice. Seeing as I am using an account it would’ve been nice to have it retain all previous chats. I’m pretty sure that will be implemented in the future though. That’s the way to have people personalize and have an even more meaningful and closer relationship with the chatbot. An option to name it would be a great addition as well. I digress though.
I asked it two more questions on general domain knowledge and here it stumbled a bit
Hmm… but then a disclaimer mentioned that it was only updated with events around 2021 so that is no big deal as of the moment. Besides, it is not yet hooked up to pull data from the internet but you can see the potential right there. Just for kicks, I asked it a question closer to home
Great summary. Couldn’t have said it better. Though like the UK Premier question, a little outdated.
I finally tried to lure it into controversy. It went all diplomatic on me.
So far, I have been impressed with the capabilities of the chat bot and I can imagine the millions of use cases for such a chatbot. There is always more room for improvement and I for one can’t wait to see where this goes.
OpenAI is already doing great things out there with GPT and I for one cant wait to see where they go next.
