Nvidia held a media event (here, on YouTube in its full two-hour version or just the highlights) on Monday. The company is fast becoming a tech giant in its own right: it is already the third largest in the world in terms of market capitalization. The event started with its founder, Jensen Huang, coming on stage in his iconic leather jacket, and telling the assembled journalists: “I hope you realize this is not a concert”, and then launching into an intensely technical session.
Over the next two hours, it became clear that that for this company, as I said some time ago, the sky is the limit: it has a new architecture to replace Hopper (after “Amazing” Grace Hopper), Blackwell, named in honor of American statistician and mathematician David Blackwell, which promises more than double the power of its predecessor in exchange for about 25 times less power consumption. If Nvidia’s chips have long beenrecognized throughout the industry as practically the only option for building systems to support AI, this is now even more so, which continues to boost the company’s valuation.
